Dechert LLP, Legal Secretary                                                                                                       October 2017 – Present

Legal Secretary to 3 partners and 2 associates in the London office within C&S. In this role I undertake a full range of duties including contract amendments, diary management, billing, filing, and general administrative tasks. I frequently provide cover for absence in the evening, and also support my colleagues when workload allows which means that I have a wide understanding of all areas of the business.

In addition to the standard legal secretary role, I am involved in the following additional duties:
– supporting to Dechert London Inclusion and Diversity committee with their communications, events, and graphic design needs. I volunteered to assist with some basic administration, and due to my previous D&I and LGBT experience have been able to expand upon that support in several additional areas. I also assisted in linking the committee up with people with experience to help them to set up their committee and align it with the business.
– Supporting the team captain of the Dechert softball team in promoting the sport within the London office with posters, and offering a training session at the beginning of the season for staff who were new to the game.

SPM Group, Operations & Events Executive                                                                      June 2016 – October 2017

Project managed and ran The Alternative Parenting Show (an exhibition conference in London) on logistics, marketing, PR, staffing, structure and client liaison from exhibitor confirmation through to post event evaluation. Implemented new processes to streamline the project. I was the sole project co-ordinator from joining the company in June through to the event taking place so was responsible for all aspects of the show.

Tasks included: liaising with suppliers, social media management, website maintenance, seeking out and approaching potential partners, client liaison and management, show administration and project management.

** eight month gap in work is due to my choosing to take time out from the corporate workplace following a stressful period that included the death of my Mum, my wife getting cancer, and the subsequent breakdown of my marriage. Legal & General Group Plc, Executive Assistant to the Group CFO                             Aug 2013 – Oct 2015

Full time support to Group Chief Executive including managing the diary, arranging travel, collating documents for board meetings, approving company travel, greeting visitors, managing the department budget, and providing holiday cover for the Chairman’s PA. I also provided ad hoc support to various Non-Executive Directors.

Managed the company travel policy. I reviewed the policy and recommended and instigated changes that resulted in a 60% decrease in out of policy travel and a 45% saving in travel spend over a 12 month period.

Supported the business on a number of projects including the implementation of social media, the set up of their Women on Boards committee including arranging events and sourcing speakers; and the introduction of the company’s LGBT Network which I chaired the London network of as well as co-ordinating the local networks for company-wide needs.

Reason for leaving: My Mum died after a long period of illness in May 2015 and then my wife got cancer shortly after. I couldn’t provide the level of support I felt was needed and decided to take some time out to myself to grieve and to support my wife.

Legal & General Group Plc, Legal PA                                                                                  Mar 2011 – Aug 2013

I supported the Group General Counsel and Senior managers within the legal team. I also hired and trained a junior legal PA during my time in the team.

I was responsible for overhauling the archiving system, reviewing and implementing upgraded document management systems, managing diaries, organising travel, collating board documents and arranging and attending the Group AGM.

I was also the main support in the process to replace the existing Group CEO, directly supporting the lead Non-Executive Director, Group General Counsel and HR in the process with headhunters right through to appointment.

Reason for leaving: promotion opportunity arose with a manager who I had a very good working relationship with.

Norton Rose LLP, Secretary and acting Secretarial Coordinator                                Oct 2007 – Mar 2011

Document amending, proof reading, copy typing, diary management, travel arrangement, secretarial management, event management and recruitment. I supported the application process for various banking PFI projects that the department were bidding on.

I also managed the department’s Intranet and Extranet using a CMS system. I also provided support to other departments as and when required.

Reason for leaving: no other opportunities internally and wanted a role with less frequent overnight projects for work-life balance. Replaced by two members of staff.

To pay for a softball tournament in Canada I worked shifts at 2 local lesbian bars. I served customers and also devised, promoted and ran events; managed the bar’s website and also produced marketing collateral including logo, flyers, menus and posters.­

Jones Lang LaSalle, Secretary                                                                                                             2004 – 2006

I was responsible for the administrative support of the team of 20 researchers, including the head of department and the global research team. I managed diaries, amended reports, typed up audio transcriptions, attended and minuted meetings and kept the department running efficiently. I also managed the team’s Intranet site.

I was also responsible for the set up and implantation of the company’s secretarial network including the creation and maintenance of the website.

Reason for leaving: reached top of pay grade with no promotion prospects and only inflation pay rises by age 18. Decided to move to London for better opportunities. Replaced by two members of staff.

Voluntary positions

Planet Nation, Co-Founder                                                                                                    Mar 2011 – present

Co-Founder of this community organisation that works hard to collaborate and support the community. Projects include the Planet Awards and the Planet Nation website. I manage a small team of volunteers (Planeteers) who keep the site running day to day as well as run an annual awards event that supports and recognises grass roots women within our community.

  • Raised over £1,500 for various LGBT charities.
  • Support small event promoters with festivals and events by sponsoring flyers or providing technical support.
  • Providing training and guidance on a range of topics from effective use of social media to setting up freelance with HMRC for various event promoters and entrepreneurs within the lesbian community.

Alongside the Lewisham LGBT Liaison Officer ran a Facebook group and regular events in Lewisham for LGBT residents.
